In Memory of Jim Bartlett, 1957-2009

Barely more than a handful of us had begun to get to know Jim through our NHPleinAir Artists' jaunts ... our Artists' Weekends at The Bartlett Inn and our White Mountains Workshop with instructor Karl Heerdt, among others.

Those of us fortunate enough to meet, paint, and dine with Jim recognized a kindred spirit ... a kind and gentle soul with a reverence for the beauty of nature and a passion for capturing its essence on canvas en plein air.

Jim recognized and appreciated the best in life - from his Volvo convertible (with "PleinAir" license plates!) to his imported cigars to his Soltek easel , and everything in between - and he strove to have and to BE the best.

No stranger to personal tragedy, he was always good natured, friendly, sharing, and generous - with a distinctive slow to start but infectious laugh.

We will miss you, Jim - sad that time for our friendship was so short. When painting en plein air, we will imagine your spirit in morning mists, your brush in the colors of a sunset, and listen for your laugh in the wind! May your spirit find peace, freedom, and happy painting grounds!
